Thank you for visiting our website and taking the time to learn about our beginnings. Although Garnet and I started out small, we have been blessed with so much over the years. We will always remember where we came from and we will always be a Maritime family company.

Garnet began planting and growing balsam fir trees in Berwick, Nova Scotia in 1981.

The decorator tins I brought home after visits with my family became very popular with friends and neighbours. When two of our children needed braces, I started selling these beautiful tins to cover their orthodontist bills.

Here I am with my first cash register. The only place to put it was on top of the family washer and dryer!

We soon found ourselves in need of more space-with 4 children and a growing business, things were getting a little cramped! Garnet began renovating our barn, and soon made it into a unique country store.

The barn was officially opened for business in September 1990.

Our eldest son, Seth, began building pine shelves and step stools for the store. He began his business venture in the basement of our home. Seth’s projects grew rapidly and expanded into a woodworking shop next to the Berwick store. The woodworking shop is now a production facility that employs almost 20 people who produce pine, oak, maple and cherry furniture.

In the beginning, Garnet used the family pick-up to haul merchandise for the store. We also started selling more and more local products.

Over the years, we have upgraded from our pick up truck to a transport truck. Quite a difference!

It wasn’t long before we had to start making plans for an addition to our original Berwick location. What had started out as a little store was certainly expanding rapidly! Our expansion opened in 1994.

Store expansion

With the success of our Berwick store, we opened in Moncton (1996) and Fredericton (2007), New Brunswick, Lower Sackville (2001) and Dartmouth (2012), Nova Scotia. We've also added The Cider Press Café (2003) at our Berwick location.

As our business grew, so did our children. Starting in the back from left to right is our eldest daughter, Margaret and her husband, Matthew, our youngest daughter, Cynthia and our eldest son, Seth. In the front is our youngest son, Jesse and his wife, Beth Anne and the two of us!

growing family

Of course you can find the two of us helping out in the stores or lunching in the café. We hope you and your family continue to enjoy your Wheaton’s experiences as we continue to serve you with quality products.

We hope you enjoyed learning about our story as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you!
